What Is -- GTA 5 Online
Grand Theft Auto 5 (V) or GTAO, GTA Online. It's free to play. A 3rd person shooter and driving game with ability to duck into cover and shoot around corners.
started on the PS3, then the PS4, then PS5 and then PC. There is a PS5 "Enhanced" version and on PC.
The PS3 online was eliminated a few years ago. PS4 is still going in June 2026. GTA 6 just released the box art for the upcoming GTA 6 game which only has a single trailer from long ago. Taking place in Vice City (Florida) again. This game GTA 5 is in California, in the fictional location of Los Santos (LA).
The online version adds Heists, and various business missions, and open world free roam gampelay along with creator mission's players make and racing and numerous modes of play made by Rockstar.
There has been countless updates adding more content and cars and all kinds of vehicles and missions.
There is no "specific" DLC to buy for it, just "Shark Cards" to add money to your account if you want easy access to cash, otherwise you need to play to earn in game money. All content is available to all players with the only barrier being either rank or money to spend in-game. Rank is limited to mission restriction from rank 1 to about 120 when you get the RPG unlocked as the final weapon, which only takes about a week of consistent gameplay, and it is somewhere around rank 50 I guess you can play and launch all missions yourself, I forget the exact number, but you can join others playing, just not host it until you rank up.
Car customization
Custom race track creator. Also various mission, survival creator, etc...
MK.2 Oppressor has rockets and flies around. Useful way to get around.
Plenty of customization for clothing, weapons, vehicles, properties.
Doesn't cost a lot to change your look, but cars individually cost over 1 million.
You can earn that in a day of solid play.
Long time veteran players can make many millions griding in a day.
The new Casino Heist and Cayo Perico (New Island added) Heist pay about a million.
Generally, everyone online in free mode will kill you all the time.
Your phone will ring and you accept missions or go to places to launch them
or do it from the menus, rinse and repeat.
You can play the "Arena War" racing mode for example, which is armored vehicles on a variety of tracks located in the arena for up to like 20 players to join.
Then there are all the other normal race modes, and then vehicle missions, and pvp death match of team death match, has all variety of game modes.
You can just play it as a racing game exclusively at this time.
Either doing specific race modes on tracks or city streets. Time trials, laps, point to point, etc..
You can buy all kinds of military vehicles.
They can be used in various ways to kill other players or for Hanger missions to go get items,
or called in any other time as a personal vehicle,
but you don't "have to" own anything, the game always gives whatever you need to play for missions.
Some missions restrict what you can call in as well.
Rockstar constantly updates the game, (quality of life improvements)
there is now a hold to run option so no more tap X to run.
The original online game released with about 30 cars and planes, helicopters, boats, and over time about a decade now, each new update added a new place to go do missions, and about 10 vehicles, so today there are about 150 cars. Some business make more money than others, some are individual gameplay you can invite others to play with you, or do it alone. The apartment heist (the first heist originally included in gta online) requires 4 players to do the set up missions so you will always see the green mission pop up on your screen from other players needing help to complete it. Ending in the bank heist mission where each player gets a cut. Some missions you go along on to collect items or deliver goods or whatever shoot up some place doesn't pay much at all.
You need to be a CEO or Motorcycle Club President to launch many missions and then it carried over to many of the interactions with the new locations added to the game require you to be a CEO or MC President just to interact with it. So other players will often try to recruit you as a member so that they can complete a mission or do a heist.
I would recommend being a CEO and do that by buying the CEO office. You can use the CEO interaction menu to spawn a Buzzard helicopter which you need to buy for about a million dollars. It can be spawned on the street nearby and get you around the map at all times in free roam doing missions, or just getting around or on various missions unrelated directly to any "ceo office" missions. The Buzzard is the black helicopter with missiles that seats 4 players. The Cayo Perico update added the Sparrow a white helicopter that can also be spawned and has unlimited missiles but only seats 2 players. The Buzzard shoots 2 then waits to reload while the Sparrow can constantly shoot. Otherwise, there is the MK.2 Oppressor the mini flying hover bike that also has missiles but can run out at 20.

The online trick is that a "personal vehicle" (from your garage or hanger) will cost insurance money to replace, while a CEO vehicle can be respawned endlessly. So you can spawn a oppressor for yourself, and a CEO buzzard for your friend, and go do a mission. Rockstar fixed it so even if it is a personal vehicle sometimes you won't pay for insurance which is like $10k for a helicopter if some other player shoots you they pay for it, and or if you crash it is free to replace, sometimes. Used to be always but now it varies for unknown reasons that includes if on a mission it won't cost you anything to replace it.

So overall, you can play this game from now until forever with all the content it has. Sometimes getting other players to join you mission or race is a long wait and even when get some it is not a full lobby so best to try searching for missions you want or races specifically and then stick with the room you get into, there are also playlists you can create. Otherwise, you can spend a long time waiting for more players most of the time. Depends, but setting up a heist seems to always get players and the final mission to do the heist always gets full lobby due to the money that is awarded. Otherwise, you end up playing with 1 or 2 other players "randoms" doing random gameplay things.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>THE ENHANCED VERSION >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The "Enhanced" version isn't much different on PS5 or PC from the PS4 version, you can own the PS4 version and play it on the PS5. There is a slight graphical difference and not much else if I remember, a new garage, and you can pay a monthly subscription fee to get access to exclusive discounts or whatever early access I'm not sure. The loading screens are different with the PS5 version when you load into the game having a variety of tiles to select from but then it boots up quicker than the PS4 in the same way with the same loading screens.
The GTA Wiki and reddit says this:
The "Enhanced Edition" of GTA 5 (officially the Expanded & Enhanced Edition) on PlayStation 5 offers major visual and performance upgrades compared to the PS4 version, including a 60 FPS mode, native 4K resolution, ray tracing, faster loading times, and exclusive vehicles.
The most significant differences include:
Graphics and Visuals Resolution and Frame Rate: The PS4 version runs at 1080p at 30 FPS. The enhanced edition features three distinct graphics modes:

> Performance RT Mode: Targets 60 FPS with upscaled 4K resolution and ray tracing enabled.

GTA Online Exclusives
> Hao’s Special Works (HSW): Exclusive vehicle upgrades available at the LS Car Meet, which significantly increase the top speed and handling of select cars.
> Career Builder: Allows new players to quickly jump into GTA Online by selecting a criminal career path and receiving a starter cash boost to buy a business, vehicle, and weapons.
> Exclusive Content Access: Access to the "GTA+" membership and new rotating vehicles and event content that are not ported back to the PS4 version.
> Migration: You can migrate your Story Mode progress and GTA Online character/progress from PS4 to PS5 using the Rockstar Games Social Club. You can migrate your account only once and all your money and items in PS4 GTAO will be in GTAO on PS5.
You can already do HSW upgrades in other locations so I'm not sure what is exclusive about Hao's.
